Descripción de la oferta de trabajo:

We are looking for a PhD candidate at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) for the project MISSION-CCS (Material Science Innovation for Accelerated, Sustainable and Safe Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage). MISSION-CCS will train 13 Doctoral Candidate Researchers (DCRs) aiming to deliver the next generation of highly trained researchers and entrepreneurs in the field of material science, specifically focused towards accelerating the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies worldwide.

MISSION-CCS belongs to Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks (DN) Programme.

Solvent based CO2 capture has shown to be scalable for removal of million tons of CO2 per year from large industries. Control of the capture plant requires deep knowledge of solvent health, to understand if the right amount of makeup and water balance is maintained.

Impurities coming from the upstream industrial processes accumulate in the scrubber and over time these components build up in the solvent. The consequence is a reduced solvent performance.

The PhD project (DCR2)aims to develop a device which would allow for online collection of corrosion data from CO2, impurities, heat stable salts and other components. This could be an inline electrochemical unit combined with infrared measurements or a sample system allowing for regular information collection. The systems would require input of big-data and automatic analysis of spectra to know the content of impurities, solvents etc.

New solvents often consist of more than one amine. When two or more amines are used it becomes very difficult to control the content of the solvent. A unit developed in this work will allow for detailed solvent management. The unit will be tested in connection to ongoing pilot work being performed at DTU which include mixed solvents.

Secondments to consortium partners are an essential part of the programme. The candidate will have secondments at Schlumberger, and Institut National Des Sciences Appliquees de Lyon in addition to conducting the PhD study in DTU.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Your overall focus will to develop results for publication on the above topic. You main task is to take responsibility of conducting the science. You will be collaborating with colleagues knowledgeable in the CO2 topic and electrochemistry and you will be traveling to various EU countries to develop you research in collaboration with important research stakeholders.

The preferred candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • A strong interest in experimental measurement
  • Knowledge of corrosion and electrochemistry is preferred
  • Knowledge of CO2 reduction principles is an advantage
  • Experiences with chemical analysis (to be specified) is an advantage.
  • Knowledge on thermodynamics and phase equilibrium is an advantage.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Philip Loldrup Fosbøl and Researcher Randi Neerup.

Emphasis will be given to candidates with already published articles or knowledge of the process of conduction research. Please indicate clearly in your application, your participation in reports, publications, books, abstracts, articles and similar scientific content.
